How WPM and typing accuracy are calculated

Words per minute

WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ elapsed minutes

Five characters represents one standardized word. If you type 225 correct characters in 60 seconds, the result is 45 WPM. The displayed WPM is rounded to the nearest whole number.

Accuracy

Accuracy = correct characters ÷ entered characters × 100

With 225 correct and 15 incorrect characters, 225 of 240 entered characters match. The result is 93.8% accuracy when rounded to one decimal place.

What the test measures

The timer starts on the first character. Each entered character is compared with the original passage at the same position. Backspacing removes that character from the current calculation, so corrections made before time expires affect the final result.

How to compare attempts

Use the same duration and a similar keyboard when tracking progress. Passage punctuation, rhythm, posture, and familiarity can change a result, so one run is better treated as a practice snapshot than a universal typing benchmark.
