What each number includes

Paste Hello world. into the tool. You should see 2 words, 12 characters, 11 characters without whitespace, 1 sentence, and 1 paragraph. The full stop counts as a character, while the space is excluded only from the “Without whitespace” total. Nothing has to be submitted to get the result.

Next, press Enter once and add One more line. The paragraph count stays at 1. Add a blank line between the two sentences and it becomes 2. This counter treats blank lines as paragraph boundaries; a line that wraps because the editor is narrow does not create a new paragraph.

Character totals count Unicode code points, including punctuation and line breaks. A simple emoji such as 😀 counts as one, but a joined family emoji or a letter with a separate combining accent can contain several. A visible symbol is therefore not always one character. These totals are not file sizes, which depend on how the text is encoded.

Why two word counters can disagree

Goodies Stack asks your browser to identify word-like and sentence segments. Hyphenated terms, apostrophes, abbreviations, and languages that do not use spaces can expose differences between browsers and writing apps. Older browsers use a simpler fallback, so their results can differ too.

For an essay limit, first check whether the assignment includes headings, quotations, footnotes, and references. Paste only the included sections here. If a submission portal applies its own counter, use that portal’s result for the final check. A disagreement does not necessarily mean either tool has lost part of your text; the counting rules may be different.

This tool measures length, not writing quality. Shortening a draft works better when you remove a repeated point or replace a vague sentence than when you delete useful context just to lower the total. Keep a copy in your editor before experimenting, because Word Counter does not autosave.

Use reading time as a planning estimate

The estimate divides the word count by 200 words per minute and rounds the display up to a whole minute. A 450-word draft takes 2 minutes 15 seconds at that assumed pace, so the label is 3 min. Non-empty text below one minute displays “< 1 min”.

The fixed pace does not account for equations, unfamiliar vocabulary, pauses, or the person reading. For a speech, rehearse aloud with a timer instead of treating the estimate as an exact delivery length. To keep a draft between visits, use the Online Notepad and download a copy when you finish.

Word Counter FAQ

Does Goodies Stack save or upload my text?

No. In this tool, your text is analyzed in the browser and is not persisted or sent to Goodies Stack.

How are words counted?

The counter uses the browser's Unicode-aware text segmentation when available, with a Unicode-aware fallback for older browsers.

How is reading time estimated?

The estimate uses a reading pace of 200 words per minute. Short non-empty text is shown as less than one minute.
